Brief history of Faculty of Urban Studies (FUS)

Vietnam, particularly Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern Area, is undergoing rapid urbanization and industrialization. After approximately 20 years of this process, the country has gained remarkable achievements but also encountered numerous social problems such as traffic congestion, urban flooding, over population, environmental pollution, social inequality and social problems, ect. A field of study and training to provide human resources for solving such problems has thus become an urgent priority.

Predecessor of Department of Urban Studies (DUS) is the Center for Urban and Community Development (CUCD), which was established on February 14th 2003. On April 18th 2007, Prof.Dr.Vo Van Sen, President of USSH, signed Decision No.70/QD-TCHC on the establishment of Department of Urban Studies and merging CUCD into this Department. On 14/12/2012, President of Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City signed another Decision on the establishment of Faculty of Urban Studies, which was preceded by Department of Urban Studies.

The Faculty of Urban Studies now has more than 400 undergraduate students, plus over 20 scholars and practitioners in urban and regional planning, urban design, environment, geography, and sociology. In addition to training, the faculty has participated in various local, national as well as international projects and academic activities.
