Faculty of Urban Studies participates in the 2018 Sustainable Urban Development (SUDP) course at University of the Philippines in both campuses Los Banos and Manila

From 6-11/09/2018, M.Eng. Dang Nguyen Thien Huong and 6 students from the Faculty of Urban Studies who was selected for the short training course in sustainable urban development program (SUDP) for students and graduate students. SUDP is one of annual activities belong to International Academic Consortium for Sustainable Cities (IACSC) held by the University of the Philippines and Yokohama City University, Japan, in UP Los Banos and UP Manila, Philippines.

The lecturers of the course are professors mainly from Yokohama City University, Japan (YCU), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), University of the Philippines (UP) and specialists in urban development of different cities. More than 60 students comes from Japan, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam. This is an opportunity for students to enrich their specialized knowledge and expand international cultural exchange activities.


Throughout the course, participants have a chance to access to rich contents related to urban with special structure - urban in low land around Lake Laguna created by volcanoes such as Los Banos City, Santa Rosa City - Silang. Through lectures, students studied about the impact of climate change on urban flood on cities around the lake caused by heavy rain fall, tropical typhoon. Other urban issues such as urban land-use, urban waste, industrial and agricultural waste also played a cause of the impact on the water quality of Laguna lake. After the class, students participated a field trip to Toyota Motors Philippines who has a strong commitment to clean water discharged, a clean poultry farm, and recycling material. Especially the community project to protect the Laguna Lake ecosystem through the Biopark along the Molawin Stream. These are the places that show the results of the effort that the city has made to minimize the harmful effects of urban development.


At UP Manila campus, students listened to a series of presentations related to global urban health research in Japan, Philippines and United States. This is a subject that many urban researchers are interested in all over the world. At the end of the course, students of Faculty of urban studies also have a report summarizing the results obtained by creative expression and received many good compliments from international friends. The course not only gives students a lot of useful knowledge and practical experience but also creates an opportunity to make friends and exchange culture, to tighten the friendship solidarity between Vietnam and other countries in the region.
