On Tuesday afternoon March 27 2012, at lecture room C204, Dinh Tien Hoang campus, the Department of Urban Studies and Management held a meeting between students of the Department and students from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, University of Malaya. This was the first meeting between the two departments which have the same training programmes, missions, and goals, and also an opportunity for the lecturers and students of the two parties to learn about each other. On the part of Malaya, the attendees included Assoc. Prof. Norhaslina Hassan, Prof. Safiah Muhamad, and 17 final-year students. On the part of University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the attendees included M.A. Bang Anh Tuan, Head of Office of International Cooperation and Project Development, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoa, Dr. Nguyen Luu Bao Doan, M.A. Nguyen Hai Nguyen, Arch. Nguyen Hoang Cam Van, M.A. Nguyen Diep Quy Vy, M.A. Bui Viet Thanh, Dr. Phu Van Han (Insitute for Southern Research) and 18 students of the Department of Urban Studies and Management.

In addition to the welcome speech of Mr. Bang Anh Tuan, Head of Office of International Cooperation and Project Development, Prof. Nguyen Minh Hoa had a speech on the possibility of developing cooperation between the two units through active student exchanges, invited lectures and jointly organizing scientific conferences, seminars and research projects. These cooperative activities are realistic because the two departments have the same training program.

On behalf of the Department of Urban Studies and Management, Prof. Nguyen Minh Hoa presented flowers and souvernirs to Assoc. Prof. Mela because she was the adviser for the establishment of Urban Studies in Vietnam. Next Malaysian students were very excited about the presentation on the topic "The Process of Urbanization in Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City "of Dr. Nguyen Luu Bao Doan.  The most interesting part of the meeting was the lively exchange between the two departments’ students. The Malaysian students were interested in transportation and student life. The Vietnamese students were more interested in the post - graduate programme of University of Malaya, which has been known as a master programme with high quality, low tuition fee ($ 2,000/semester) and short-term training (two semesters) in a clean, disciplined and friendly natural and social environment of Kuala Lumpur.

Meeting and exchange between students and students from other countries is a part of the international integration strategy of the Department of Urban Studies and Management’s Management Board. This is the first time the department’s students directly exchanged in English. Despite some awkward at first, the students soon appeared to be confident, and dynamic as the host when entering the exchange section. In the future similar activities will be strengthened and expanded.

The meeting was a success, and the department’s students got the satisfaction and encouragement from the Dean, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Minh Hoa.
